So what do you do if you literally have no choice but walmart? For example, if you need a new hose NOW or all your fruit trees (that don't actually produce fruit, but that's a different story...) will die and you only have $20, you can't go buy the better quality $30 at HD. Just not an option, even knowing you will have to replace the WM hose in a tenth the time.
Yes, I believe the food is better quality at the local grocery, but I have a big family and literally only have x amount of money to keep tummies full for a week (I spend $30-40 per person per week including all cleaning and hygiene supplies, home and bicycle repairs, animal feed [chickens, meat rabbits, dog, cat] and gardening supplies. That's feeding 4 adults, 2 teen boys and a teen girl, plus the little kids).
It is my choice to buy 7 days worth of food at WM or 5 day worth at the grocery store, and 7 days until the next pay check. What then? You buy the bad food, that's what. (This applies to organic, grass-fed, etc food too. Yep they are healthier. Yep we'd spend less in the long run in med bills, but mostly because people that starve to death don't go to the doctor's often. I do use whole wheat and honey instead of white and sugar) I use coupons, savings catcher, bulk buys when I can, cook from scratch, try to garden (I live in the desert so it might actually be cheaper if I didn't), and literally every other way I can think of to save money. I can tell most "save money lists" things they left out!
Buy clothes at other stores than WM? Heck, I'd love to be able to afford WM! We buy at the thrift store. Yes, I know those clothes have to be replaced sooner than if we bought new, but again, when you have $x and new costs $x + $5, and your child has one pair of pants left to their name (due to a series of unfortunate events:-P), you buy the thrift store clothes. You can keep hoping that by the time these wear out you can afford better quality, but you know you won't be able to.
Oh, hey, save money by installing solar! the gove will reimburse you a %, too. And where am I supposed to get the upfront $$ to do that?
Get this app that gives great electronic coupons for the stuff you actually buy! Not compatible with cheap devices and computers of course:-P
So how is someone truly living below the poverty line supposed to save money? Short or long term? How are they supposed to afford the better quality that will last longer in the first place? How are they supposed to get the money to stock up? ("Hey look! great deal on x that we use every week. I'd save a bundle over the year! Now what day of the week can we go hungry so I can afford this?")
In America, only the rich (being defined as anyone over the poverty line) can afford to save money:-(
