Partnership: When Dad Works and Mom Stays Home - Kevin A. Thompson
Hubby and I have always known every penny on his paycheck is both of ours. We have never questioned it.
There is no way on earth he could work the 13 hours a day he has to in his industry if I didn't cover everything at home. If he had to worry about the dishes, laundry, cleaning, shopping, etc he couldn't be at work as many hours as his industry requires.
On the other hand, I couldn't do all those things for the home if I had to worry about an outside-career, about pleasing a boss.
Neither of us could do our jobs without the other.
So in 29 years of marriage it has never occurred to either of us that the money deposited in the bank account each week was either his or mine. It is ours. Just as the house is ours, the kids are ours, the cars are ours, and the vacations are ours.
(The only tiny exception is that we each have an allowance that is all ours to spend on whatever we want. He buys his lunches out, newspapers, and magazines such as Sunset with his. I buy my Hair Clips, and things to decorate the house with mine. But this is just "play money," not family money. In similar fashion, the kids all get allowances too.)
