5. “She works willingly with her hands.” Proverbs 31:13b

After seeking just the right materials for the needs of her household, the Proverbs 31 woman sets to work making them up into useful articles. She doesn't stick them in a closet (or the big plastic box by the spinning wheel) and forget about them.

She doesn't procrastinate. She gets busy and accomplishes something.

We Americans are often quite lazy. We spend hours in front of the TV, or reading fluffy novels, or visiting on the phone, or surfing the web and then wonder why we never get anything done.

How did our ancestors do it all anyway? How did they spin their own thread, weave their own cloth, sew and knit their own clothes, launder them by hand AND cook all their food from scratch?

One thing that has struck me about some books I have read (see, I am preaching at me here) from the 1800's is that the mother is always doing something. Even when she is resting, the knitting or mending is always at hand.

Maybe we could develop the habit of always having something at hand to work on. Surely the joy of accomplishment is as refreshing as zonking out in front of the TV or getting the latest gossip on Facebook.

Maybe even more refreshing in the long run.

One thing is apparent; this virtuous woman does not grumble and complain. She is a willing worker, and not at just the prestigious jobs; but the mundane, everyday things. Whatever work God has given us to do, let's set our mind to doing it willingly, and joyfully. Let us "do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;." Colossians 3:23
